Due to the nature of Gas Oil (Red Diesel) and its many applications, there is often a regular requirement from many customers to either uplift fuel from their tanks or remove the fuel, or to uplift the fuel and transfer to either other tanks on site, or to move to an alternative site. For fuel removal (where it is not transferred to another customers site) depending on the quality of the fuel, this service is chargeable for fuel that is of waste standard. If the fuel is of a higher quality, Craggs Environmental will be able to offer a rebate against the uplifted fuel, assuming it has a resale value.
There are a number of reasons that the fuel may require removal or transfer:
- Fuel is redundant due to change in customer requirements
- Fuel is badly contaminated and cannot be cleaned on site
- Fuel is no longer of high enough quality for required application (for example standby power generation)
- Tank is required for cleaning or maintenance
- Tank is damaged and leaking

To be of significant value, the fuel will need to be within, or very close, to ISO and British Standards for refinery grade fuel. Under the Craggs Environmental fuel quality scale, detailed below, this would equate to grades 1 and 2.
If the fuel quality is around grade 3, there will be a lower rebate value available for customers who wish to have the fuel removed and finally, below grade 3, where the fuel is likely to be classified as waste, there will usually be a charge to remove and dispose of the waste fuel.
Craggs Environmental has a large fleet of tankers capable of uplifting and transferring volumes from small 1000 litre IBC tanks, through to full 40,000 litre articulated vehicles for the largest uplifts anywhere across the UK (including most Islands).
These services can be provided on an ad hoc basis, where a customer has a specific requirement, or can be provided as part of a more regular Fuel Management Service, in which the responsibility of testing, monitoring, cleaning and transferring fuel is provided on a fixed price annual basis.
In this case, Craggs Environmental takes full responsibility for ensuring that the right levels of fuel at the correct quality are in the right tanks – giving customers confidence that fuel quality or quantity will never be a risk to the business or public service involved.
Craggs Environmental has designed a methodology to categorise fuels into 5 standard grades, based upon a range of factors which can be tested. This simple, but very effective approach helps customers to make sensible decisions as to what quality of fuel is acceptable for the various applications each site might require.
